The boomerang

The term "boomerang effect" is often used today. Just read the newspaper articles to make you aware.

But what does that mean?

It comes directly from the boomerang. You all know what it is. It is a kind of object that curved back toward the pitcher - the last good pitcher - when he sends into the air, unless it reaches its target.

This object was discovered by Cook in the conquest of Australia in 1770. They are the aborigines who invented it. They used to hunt.

By extension, emerged the term "boomerang effect".

According to the Great Terminology Dictionary, is "contrary to the intentions of the author, goes against his goal. "

The psychology has taken hold of this formula in the 50s. This is Carl Hovland, American psychologist, a specialist in communications and human interactions that, in 1953, made such an application. Thus, in seeking to influence someone gives an effect opposite of that expected.

To illustrate the boomerang effect, often used the example of drugs. Thus, it has this effect when there is increase in drug use after a campaign launched to warn against their harmful effects.

In one of my previous articles, I mentioned the advertisements which are inserted into messages like "Eat less fat, less salt, less sweet. And I indicated that these messages had an opposite effect from that intended by the State. Indeed, some people watching these ads, thinking that the product presented (chocolate bars, biscuits, cakes, etc..) Is good for their health. It has a boomerang effect.

Indeed, when warnings are provided, it seems necessary to think much and weigh the pros and cons. It would almost get into the minds of people to consider whether such messages may not have the opposite effect than what we originally thought.

Similarly, you also need to think twice when you act or you say something. It may be that it produces the opposite effect, contrary to your original intentions. For this reason you should not leave anything to chance.

For example, when you meet someone for the first time, do you expose a row, to reveal everything about you. Indeed, it is possible that your partner does not agree with your opinion or your way of life. In this case, it will use what he learned on you to harm you. So take the time to better understand, better identify the person before you trust completely. This will save you much inconvenience you have a lot of trouble catching up.

Another example, take the time to think before you invest in a person. It may be that the latter have you lied and you have pity with his rhetoric. I'm not saying that we should help anyone and he must be wary of everyone, but take the time to think. Do not go for head bowed. Your original intentions were certainly laudable, but ultimately you will be betrayed and you have been manipulated by a crook that you have withdrawn money. Or wanting to help at any price a person with problems without really thinking about how to help or without putting in its place, you will do worse. Your generosity will turn into disaster.

Your actions, your words can easily turn against you. You can be the "backlash" or "backlash" expressions very similar to the boomerang effect.

The only way to avoid it is to reflect on your actions, your words, weigh the pros and cons and not rush headlong. Everything in life is a matter of degree, strength in the words, gestures and attitudes.
